Think about the things you pray for. YHC recounted a story from a few years ago where a friend sent me a text along the lines of “I’ve just been in a fender bender, I need you to pray that I don’t get a ticket so my insurance rates don’t go up.” My response was, “I’m not going to pray for that.” My reasoning was simple, if I prayed that my friend wouldn’t get the ticket, I’m also praying that someone else WOULD get a ticket, whether they deserved it or not. I’m not going to inadvertently ask God to punish someone else so that my friend’s insurance rates don’t go up. Instead I prayed for clarity for the investigating officer, so that the citation be accurately given to whoever was at fault.

I would encourage you to really think about the things you pray for, or are asked to pray for. Is it something truly worthy of prayer? Is it something that may bring benefit to someone while also inadvertently bringing harm to another? (In the case of the traffic ticket)

While Mark 11:24 says “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours”, Philippians 4:8 also states “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” These are the thoughts that should guide our prayers.

SYITG, Heidi
