Moleskin:
I borrowed this from a church email, and read it to the PAX:
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.”
James 1:22-24
James uses the analogy of a mirror to help us understand the fallacy of hearing God’s word and thinking just our knowledge of it will be good enough without actually applying it to our lives. It would be similar to looking in a mirror and promptly forgetting what we’d seen. None of us do that. In fact, even though we know what we look like, we still repeatedly check on our reflection many times a day.
God’s word makes the difference in our life only when we actually do what it says. Just knowing it isn’t good enough. Obedience is the indicator of our devotion. Jesus makes this clear in his Father’s words in John 14:23-24. Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.”
In the same way we wouldn’t want to go through life constantly forgetting what we look like, let’s not be people who only hear the word of God but don’t follow through on doing what it says. Knowing should lead to doing.
Great job showing up this morning men!
Heidi out.
