Jesus said, “Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:26-28
As one who struggles with pride and selfishness, the example of Jesus as the ultimate suffering servant and servant leader is inspiring to me. Striving for humility each day is a constant goal.
In my relationships with others I often selfishly ask, “what’s in it for me?”, and I’m reminded by the Lord either to stop asking that question, or (perhaps even more importantly) realize that pleasing the Lord is what’s in it for me, not pleasing people or getting something in return from others. And serving joyfully with a grateful heart is also a mark of a servant leader that I want to exemplify.
Men, let’s all strive to encourage each other in this style of servant leadership that Jesus modeled for us!
